More than Meds: How Lifestyle Medicine Pharmacists Can Deprescribe, Supplement and Support Lifestyle Change

Presentation Summary: Pharmacists are among the most accessible and trusted health professionals, yet their role in lifestyle medicine remains underrecognized. They are often perceived as medication-focused providers or barriers to deprescribing rather than collaborators in lifestyle-first care. The pharmacy profession has evolved substantially, positioning pharmacists as clinicians equipped to support medication optimization, deprescribing, evidence-informed supplementation, and sustained behavior change.

This session will begin with a brief overview of the evolution of the pharmacy profession, highlighting the shift from product-centered roles to patient-centered clinical practice. Modern pharmacists are trained in comprehensive medication management, chronic disease care, population health, and interprofessional collaboration—competencies that align closely with lifestyle medicine’s emphasis on prevention, root-cause treatment, and reducing unnecessary pharmacologic burden. Recognizing this evolution creates opportunities to more intentionally integrate pharmacists into lifestyle medicine care models.

A central focus of the session will address misconceptions about pharmacists’ beliefs and roles in deprescribing and medication reduction. While pharmacists are sometimes viewed as resistant to deprescribing, their training emphasizes medication safety, adverse effect identification, pharmacokinetics, and risk–benefit assessment across the lifespan. Lifestyle medicine–trained pharmacists add value through shared decision-making, individualized tapering strategies, and patient education—capabilities that are especially important as lifestyle interventions reduce long-term medication needs.

Building on this foundation will be a panel discussion featuring pharmacists actively practicing and teaching lifestyle medicine across diverse settings. Panelists will share examples of pharmacist-led and pharmacist-integrated lifestyle medicine interventions. These examples will highlight scalable approaches for lifestyle medicine clinicians to partner with pharmacists to enhance patient care and expand access to lifestyle-focused services.
By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer understanding of how pharmacists function as essential members of lifestyle medicine teams and gain practical insights into engaging pharmacists in deprescribing efforts and integrating them into lifestyle medicine programs. As lifestyle medicine grows and healthcare systems grapple with polypharmacy and workforce constraints, this session highlights pharmacists as a timely, underutilized resource for safe deprescribing and scalable lifestyle-first care.
