The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is responsible for protecting and managing the state’s fish, forest, and wildlife resources and providing opportunities for all citizens to use, enjoy, and learn about these resources. MDC’s staff, working collaboratively with a myriad of volunteers and partners, stands out as a national leader in conservation. In addition to taking care of nature and maintaining public trust, we’re committed to helping people connect to nature. Increasing emphasis is being placed on showcasing the inextricable connection of the health of people with the health of environment around them. Last year, our dedicated staff hosted more than 6,000 educational programs at our local nature centers helping more than 338,000 individuals enjoy time outdoors and improve social connection through activities like fishing, kayaking, hiking, and wildlife watching. Reinforced by the growing body of scientific literature and research, our work supports positive human health outcomes resulting in improved memory, vision, concentration, reduced stress and inflammation, and many more. This provides us with exciting opportunities to partner with communities and health care providers through efforts like the American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s Nature as Medicine committee helping people enjoy improved mental and physical health by increasing their access to and time spent in nature.
