Jorge Otañez, MD, DipABLM, is a board-certified Family Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine physician and currently serves as Associate Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director at TrueCare, a large Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) system in Southern California. In this role, he provides clinical and strategic leadership across multiple sites, with a focus on quality improvement, value-based care, workforce development, and innovative models that expand access to care for underserved communities.
With over 15 years of healthcare experience in both Mexico and the United States, Dr. Otañez brings a bicultural and binational perspective to healthcare delivery and leadership. He completed medical school at the Autonomous University of Baja California, participated in UCLA’s International Medical Graduate Program, and trained in Family Medicine at UC San Diego, where he served as Chief Resident.
He leads the development of “TrueWellness: A Community Ecosystem for Sustainable Health,” integrating physical activity, nutrition, mental health, and social support services into primary care through evidence-based, scalable programs. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, a California Health Care Foundation/UCSF Leadership Fellow, and serves on multiple regional and national committees focused on health equity, physician workforce development, and care for underserved populations.
Committed to mentorship and advocacy, Dr. Otañez is passionate about advancing the Latinx medical workforce, supporting international medical graduates, and addressing structural drivers of health disparities. He has several appearances on TV and has been recognized as one of San Diego’s Top 50 Latino Leaders of Influence for his contributions to community health and education. He is currently working on obtaining certifications in both Culinary Medicine and Obesity Medicine.
