Dr. Merlo is a clinical professor of psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, associate editor of the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. She has served in various leadership roles, including the 2026-2028 Treasurer of the APA. In 2025, she was awarded the ACLM Health System/Agency Special Recognition Award and the APA Presidential Commendation Award. Merlo has published over 50 academic papers and book chapters, including a seminal paper describing the updated and expanded pillar of connectedness. She edited and authored four academic books on medical professionalism and lifestyle medicine. The book Lifestyle Psychiatry: Through the Lens of Behavioral Medicine expanded the area of Lifestyle Medicine to include social determinants of health, psychological principles, and the bidirectionality of physical and mental health. She has been involved in clinician care and medical education for nearly 30 years, with a focus on professional development and mental health, particularly for healthcare professionals. She sees patients at the Faculty Group Practice at NYU Langone Health in New York City with a special focus on lifestyle psychiatry and individual & couples therapy.
