Jocelyn Mallard is a pediatric nurse practitioner specializing in sickle cell disease (SCD) care. She has been working with this complex patient population for over 20 years in inpatient and outpatient settings. Throughout her career, she’s witnessed the struggles adolescents and emerging adults experience during the transition from pediatric to adult care. Currently she is working with a dynamic team to further develop an education program that prepares adolescents to successfully transition to adult sickle cell care. She continues to educate families and patients about SCD and disease management practices. Access to healthy food is important for everyone, but especially for those suffering from chronic illness. Understanding the relationship between nutrition and optimal health has led her to serve on the Medical Advisory Board for the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. She utilizes her knowledge of sickle cell disease and nutrition to inform others about comprehensive disease management – using disease modifying medicines in combination with making wise food choices. Partnering with Plant-based Nutrition Movement to provide “food as medicine” education to people with chronic illness specifically sickle cell disease has been a highlight of her career.
