Chair/CEO of US Men's Shed Association
USMSA dba, US Mens's Sheds Association
Wilson, Wyoming, United States
Founder and Board Chair, US Men’s Sheds, Mark Winston became a founding Director of the US Men’s Shed Movement (2017) after the President of the International Men’s Shed organization reached out and asked him – along with two other gentlemen - to bring the Shed movement to America. Throughout the world, Men’s Sheds, Community Sheds and She Sheds have been highly successful; most of those are being financially supported by their federal governments. In addition to starting the US National movement, he also helped start the second Men’s Shed in Canada. As a member of the American Public Health Association Men’s Health Caucus, he supports the development of a US Men’s Health Department under HHS. His corporate career began in the Washington, DC area. Mark’s journey took a significant turn when he transitioned from the corporate environment to a more entrepreneurial path. Mark has been an entrepreneur for half his life and has also worked as a consultant, helping others start and run new businesses. Mark works on behalf of the Shed movement because he has seen for himself the benefit that Shed participation makes in the lives of individuals. One member told him, “Thank you for giving me my life back!” He had his epiphany moment while watching a gathering of men who had formerly been spending most of their time home alone. Mark says that watching their interactions was one of those moments that will remain in his memory forever. “It really convinced me of the value of attending a Shed. I want to see a Shed in every community. Men in other countries have far more opportunities than we do in the US. I want to change that.” Mark’s motto is: “Helping others is the best thing you can do for yourself.” mark@usmenssheds.org
