Dr. Kathleen C Head, MD, MS, MPH, FAAP, DipABLM is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and Associate Medical Director of the Boeing Center for Children's Wellness at the Medical University of South Carolina. Inspired during her childhood to understand the link between diet and disease, she received a BS in Nutritional Sciences from Rutgers University and an MS in Health Promotion Management from American University. In her first career, she effected policy and practice change while working as Health Promotion Specialist for the US government and a Research Associate at the Institute of Medicine, implementing and evaluating public health programs. After completing medical school at George Washington University and residency at MUSC, Dr. Head earned a Master of Public Health as well as a certificate in Culinary Coaching. She is board certified in Lifestyle Medicine and now serves patients at the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics clinic and Wellness Works, MUSC’s pediatric weight management and lipid disorder treatment center. Since 2018, Dr. Head has been working with the MUSC Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness to bring disease preventing policy, systems, and environmental change strategies to South Carolina schools. Her research helps to identify school-based interventions that improve the health of children, including lifestyle, farm to school, and culinary nutrition programs. She is a leader in the South Carolina Food is Medicine movement and serves as Co-chair for the Academic Pediatric Association Nutrition and Food is Medicine Special Interest Group and the Food is Medicine SC Coalition. She is a founding board member and Continuing Education Activity Director for the SC Pediatric Healthy Lifestyles and Metabolic Syndrome Learning Collaborative, a free online learning opportunity which aims to build healthcare provider knowledge in diet-related disease prevention and treatment. In her free time, Dr. Head enjoys creating new recipes, watching Philadelphia sports with her family, and spending time in nature.
